Updating Canada’s Natural Health Products Regulations

By: Vicki Schofield, Regulatory Affairs Specialist, email

Natural Health Products have been in the news recently as Health Canada works to modernize the Regulation of Self Care Products. As the second round of public consultations come to a close, the CMAJ published an editorial suggesting that Natural Health Products should be, among other things, subject to more rigorous scientific study as evidence of claims and sold separately from over-the-counter drug products.

Natural Health Products fall under the scope of the proposed Self Care Products Regulations which are currently under review by Health Canada. Dell Tech Regulatory Experts have participated in several forums to discuss and comment on the proposed changes. Information on the consultation process can be found here.

Health Canada consulted with over 3500 Canadians and learned that Canadians want more information about Natural Health Products. Canadians would like more information about:

  • How Health Canada defines risk
  • How natural health products will be classified
  • What evidence is required to support a claim
