Automotive and Household Maintenance Products Included in Canada’s New VOC Regulations

Canada’s Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) Regulations come into effect January 1, 2024. This is the deadline for most product categories including automotive and household maintenance products. These account for a significant number of products that are subject to the new regulations.

Examples of automotive and household maintenance products but are not limited to:

  • Automotive brake cleaner
  • Automotive wash (excluding products specific to locomotives or aircraft)
  • Windshield water repellent
  • Bathroom or tile cleaner
  • Dusting aids
  • General-purpose hard-surface cleaner

Schedule 1 of the regulations outlines the VOC limits for each sub-category of automotive and household maintenance products.

The Canadian Environmental Protection Act regulations set out additional requirements for record keeping, product labelling and reporting by an accredited laboratory.

Importers and manufacturers of automotive and household maintenance products are responsible for meeting the requirements of these new Canadian VOC regulations.

It is expected that companies will be in compliance by January 1, 2024. The regulations are also widely applicable to personal care products.
