Retail Consumer Product Labelling for the USA. There’s more to it than just hazard labelling.

By: Joe McCarthy, Lab Service Manager/Senior Regulatory Affairs Specialist, email

For Consumer Products such as Laundry detergents, Dish detergents, Household cleaners, Air Fresheners & Diffusers, Automotive cleaning/maintenance, Floor polishes, Aerosols, and Paints there are four regulations that need to be considered for US Consumer labeling and compliance,

i)   Consumer product labeling under the Federal Hazardous Substances and Poison Prevention Packaging Act.

ii)  California Prop 65 warnings.

iii)  Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) limits and labeling, particularly important for California.

iv) California Cleaning Product Ingredient Disclosure Regulations for Cleaning Products. (Starts January 1, 2020, for website, January 2021 for labels)

There can be significant monetary penalties for noncompliance.
