Notice of Proposal to Update Nutrition Labelling: Table of Reference Amounts for Food

On December 21, 2023, Health Canada issued a notice of proposal for the proposed changes to the Table of Reference Amounts for Food (TRA). Reference amount is defined as the amount of food that can be reasonably consumed in one sitting and is used as the serving size in the nutrition facts table. The last update to the table was published on November 24, 2022. This update carried a compliance deadline of December 31, 2025.

The proposed changes will influence high-fibre cereals, nutritional yeast, and fondue cooking broths. Here is a summary of the proposed changes to the Table of Reference Amounts for Food:

  1. Adding a new serving size for “ready-to-eat breakfast cereals, puffed and coated, flaked, extruded, without fruit or nuts (weighing 20 g to 42 g per 250 mL), very high fibre cereals (with 28 g or more fibre per 100 g)
    1. Very high-fibre cereals (with 28 g or more fibre per 100 g) – fraction cup (30 g)
  2. New product category, “nutritional yeast”, with a reference amount of 5 g
  3. Separating “fondue cooking broths” into its own category with a reference amount of 5 mL

The deadline for implementing the changes to affected products is January 1, 2026.
