EPA Updates List of Alternative Test Methods or Strategies (New Approach Methodologies aka NAMs)

 In Regulatory Affairs

By: Joe McCarthy, Lab Service Manager/Senior Regulatory Affairs Specialist, email

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has updated its list of alternative test methods or strategies (New Approach Methodologies or NAMs) that do not require new vertebrate animal testing. This action helps meet the requirements of the Toxic Substances Control Act to reduce and replace, to the extent practicable and scientifically justified, the use of vertebrate animals in the testing of chemical substances or mixtures.

Included on the list of alternative methods are;

OECD 435/Corrositex®

Corrositex® (OECD 435) is specifically cited and accepted by the following:

  • United States Department of Transportation (DOT) Hazardous Materials Regulations
  • Canada Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Regulations
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) 2012
  • WHMIS Technical Guidance
  • US EPA Method 1120

Validated in vitro OECD methods cited and accepted by the:

  • Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Hazardous Substances Regulations
  • Canada Consumer Chemicals and Containers Regulation (CCCR 2001)

How does Corrositex® (OECD 435) work?

You can review our Corrositex Blog to see how easy it is to use. We also invite you to watch our Corrositex demonstration video.

OECD 496/ Ocular Irritection®

The only completely animal free OECD ocular irritation tests. Ocular Irritection® is an in vitro macromolecular test for the identification and classification of chemicals that induce severe eye damage or chemicals that do not require classification.

Developed by InVitro International, a pioneer in the development and application of in vitro methods, Ocular Irritection® is available in convenient laboratory kits that enable the accurate and effective detection of irritants in unbeatable time.
