What is Corrositex®?

Corrositex® is a test kit developed by In Vitro International for the purposes of classifying a corrosive substance for skin/dermal corrosion. Corrositex® is a validated OECD in vitro method (OECD 435).

The test can be performed by people with common laboratory bench skills such as weighing and pipetting. See how it’s done in our demonstration video!

The Corrositex® Advantage

  • Accurate hazard classifications and defensible data.
  • A practical alternative to animal testing.
  • For the regulations that apply to your business.
  • Corrositex® (OECD 435) is a fraction of the cost of animal testing.
  • Corrositex® (OECD 435) can reduce shipping costs with properly classified materials.
  • Quick results when the timing is critical.
  • The test can be performed by your staff at your facility.
  • Option to have Dell Tech’s ISO 17025 Accredited lab test your product for you.

Frequently Asked Questions about Corrositex®:

What regulations or regulatory body accepts Corrositex as proof of classification?

OECD 435/ Corrositex is listed as an accepted method by the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) and by extension, OSHA 2012 and WHIMS 2015, the workplace regulations in US and Canada. The transportation regulatory bodies – TDG for Canada and DOT for US – accepts the results of OECD 435/Corrositex as proof of classification.

Additionally, the test results can be used for consumer product labelling and compliance under Consumer Chemical and Container Regulations, 2001 (CCCR) for Canada or 16 CFR 1500 for US.

Why should you choose Corrositex OECD 435 method instead of OECD 404?

The OECD 404 is an in-vivo test method that uses live animals to test the skin corrosion potential of chemicals. Many countries, including Canada, are banning animal testing for cosmetics and other consumer products. The Corrositex OECD 435 performed at Dell Tech is an in-vitro test method that uses a membrane made of a chemical that mimics the skin reaction to chemicals. Additionally, OECD 404 is 2 – 3 times more expensive than than the Corrositex in-vitro test method. And finally, the results for OECD 435 can be available as soon as 24 hours instead of 14 days.

What will the test report will show?

The test report will contain a short summary of the method, the breakthrough time point, the positive and negative controls and the test product classification for GHS and TDG/DOT. Products can be classified as Category 1A/TDG Class 8 PG I, Category 1B/TDG Class 8 PGII, Category 1C/TDG Class 8 PG III or require Corrosion to metals testing to remove the corrosive classification.
