The Workplace Hazardous Materials Bureau of Health Canada announced on Friday, May 19th, 2017 that Manufacturer, Importer, and Distributor deadlines for GHS compliance are being extended. There is no change to the deadline for employers.

 Original DeadlineNew Deadline
Importers & ManufacturersJune 1, 2017June 1, 2018
DistributorsJune 1, 2018September 1, 2018
EmployersDecember 1 , 2018No change

The change to compliance deadline also extends the period where either WHMIS 1988 or WHMIS 2015 Labels and Safety Data Sheets may be used.

This notice will be published in the Canada Gazette Part II, likely by May 31, 2017.

This extension is being granted in part to amend the Hazardous Products Regulations (WHMIS 2015) to restore the use of prescribed concentration ranges in Section 3 of an SDS without the need for a HMIRA Claim for Exemption (trade secret) Registration.

The proposed amendments to restore prescribed concentration ranges to the Hazardous Products Regulations (WHMIS 2015) to be expected to be published in summer 2017.

Trade secrets claims for a chemical identity or CAS# will still need a HMIRA Claim for Exemption Registration.
