Vitamin D: RDI Under Review
By: Sarah Calder, Regulatory Affairs Specialist, email
The Therapeutic Products Directorate has announced it will review the existing level of Vitamin D on the Prescription Drug List due to increasing interest from stakeholders and evolving scientific evidence. Health Canada currently lists the non-prescription limit of vitamin D at 1000 International units (IU), whereas other international regulatory authorities list the non-prescription limit much higher. This limit was published in 1997, and current scientific data has shown safe levels outside this amount.
Health Canada is scheduled to publish their review in early 2019. Public consultation on the proposed amendments to the Prescription Drug List will follow shortly after publication.
