PMRA Publishes Re-Evaluation Decision (RVD2016-01) on Boric Acid and its Salts (Boron)

After a long re-evaluation of the various uses of boric acid and its salts, Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA), is granting continued registration for most of these uses in Canada. The re-evaluation included the active ingredients boric acid, borax (pentahydrate), borax (disodium tetraborate decahydrate), disodium octaborate tetrahydrate, and zinc borate.

The evaluation of all available scientific information found that most of the uses of boron do not pose unacceptable risks to human health or the environment when used according to the required revised label directions noted in the re-valuation decision document. To comply with this decision, the required mitigation measures must be implemented on all product labels sold by registrants no later than July 22, 2018.

In addition, certain uses are to be canceled to address risks of concern to human health. These uses include:

Commercial dust/soluble powder formulations applied to poultry houses and barns
Commercial solution/soluble powder formulations applied by paintbrush
Domestic dust and granular formulation products, as well as solutions that are not in enclosed bait stations.

The last date of sale of the affected domestic boron products and the commercial products currently registered for use in poultry houses and barns by the Registrants and Retail is July 22, 2017, and July 22, 2018, respectively. The registration of these products will expire on July 22, 2019.
