Countin’ Calories! How Will Ontario’s New Menu Labeling Law Affect You and Your Business?

The Healthy Menu Choices Act, 2015 will come into effect in Ontario on January 1, 2017. The Act will require all food service providers with 20 or more premises in Ontario under the same name (regardless of ownership) to display the calories of food and drink items on menus. The Act will apply to any premise where food is available for immediate consumption, including convenience stores, movie theatres, grocery stores, and restaurants, and the information listed must be specific to the variety, flavor, and size of the item. Failure to comply may lead to a fine of $5,000 per day.

Dell Tech offers Food Label Compliance services, including the creation of nutrition facts tables (NFT) and bilingual ingredient and allergen statements. We will also be providing a requirements checklist to ensure your products are correctly labeled under the Food and Drugs Act and the Consumer Packaging and Labeling Act. If you are a franchiser or a single-restaurant owner looking to provide nutritional data for your customers, contact Dell Tech today at 519-858-5021 or visit our website to learn more about our services.

Please note the province is still seeking input into the draft regulation of the Healthy Menu Choices Act. You can view the draft here.
