Deadline for Child-Resistant Containers in Vaping Products – Updated Timeline

 In Vaping

By: Ivy Tang, Product Safety Specialist, email

Under the Vaping Products Labelling and Packaging Regulations (VPLPR), vaping devices, vaping parts, and immediate containers containing a vaping substance that has nicotine must have child-resistant packaging (CRC). The purpose of CRC is to protect youth by reducing the risk of ingesting toxic concentrations of nicotine.

The CRC requirements under the VPLPR come into force on January 1st, 2021. It is expected that the industry make best efforts to comply with these changes. However, Health Canada recognizes that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the ability of businesses to source and comply with the CRC requirements.

As a result, the following approach to compliance and enforcement for CRC is as follows:

  • January 1, 2021- June 30, 2021: Existing guidance and information will continue to be provided; compliance will be promoted by Health Canada.
  • Beginning July 1, 2021: Compliance monitoring will increase. Health Canada will take enforcement action to address non-compliances.
