Countdown to WHMIS 2015 Compliance: 12 months

As part of the ongoing transition into WHMIS 2015 (GHS) the first deadline is fast approaching. As of June 1st, 2017 all Canadian Manufacturers and Importers must start using only the new Hazardous Products Regulations (HPR) format Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and Labels.
The Hazardous Products Regulations replace the Controlled Products Regulations. These regulations define how hazardous chemicals intended for use in the workplace are classified and how suppliers provide relate hazard information through labels and Safety Data Sheets. Generally known as WHMIS.
Key changes in the Hazardous Products Regulations
- MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) now called SDS (Safety Data Sheet)
- SDS now 16 sections instead of 9
- New and different symbols (Pictograms) with red borders
- New Hazard Classes such as; Pyrophoric Gases, Simple Asphyxiants, Combustible Dusts, Physical Hazards Not Otherwise Classified (PHNOC), Specific Target Organ Toxicity — Single Exposure, Aspiration Hazard, Health Hazards Not Otherwise Classified (HHNOC)
- Expanded Hazard Class criteria & ranges for; Flammable Gases, Flammable Liquids, Organic Peroxides, Acute Toxicity, Irritants, Sensitizers
- Repeal of Ingredient Disclosure List (IDL)
- WHMIS hatched border no longer required on the label
- 3-year automatic expiry of MSDS removed
- Removal of defined concentration ranges for disclosure in Section 3 of SDS
