Canada Food and Drug Regulations Amendment

 In news, Product Safety

By: Ivy Tang, Product Safety Specialist, email

We are officially one year into Health Canada’s five-year transition plan to update nutrition and ingredient labeling for all prepackaged foods.

These changes, enforced by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), include amendments to the Nutritional Facts Table template, declaration of food colours, the grouping of sugars, and the disclosure of allergens. This initiative is intended to modernize food safety, and improve the way information is presented to Canadian consumers. During this period, manufacturers may follow the old or new.

The final amendments to the Food and Drug Regulations (FDR) in full were published in last December’s Canada Gazette, or find a brief outline of the proposed changes here.
