Product Safety Update: Addition of NPEs to the EPA’s Toxic Release Inventory list

By: Ivy Tang, Product Safety Specialist, email

Addition of NPEs to the EPA’s Toxic Release Inventory list

Earlier this month, the EPA proposed the addition of a category for nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) to the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) list of reportable chemicals. NPEs are surfactants, a group of chemicals that reduce the surface tension of water. NPEs are commonly found in cleaners, wetting agents, paints, and emulsifiers.

The addition of this new category is based on the toxicity and potential risks posed by NPEs to humans the environment. In particular, NPEs are highly toxic to aquatic organisms.

The proposed category would cover 13 NPEs. It is estimated that 178 facilities will be affected by the new TRI category. Manufacturers and companies using NPEs can file one reporting form.
