Changes to Ontario Building Code Regulations

By: Kirsten Alcock, Manager of Product Safety,  email

On July 14, 2017, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs announced a proposal to revoke and replace the current version of the Building Code within Ontario.  Potential changes include and but are not limited to reducing the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by using more efficient methods for renovating larger buildings, new multi-unit residential buildings will require electric vehicle charging stations for their residents, triple pane windows will now be required on new housing to reduce heat transfer and energy consumption, implementing solar ready roofs and hurricane straps in newly built homes.

Some of these proposed changes are expected to come into effect in January 2019. For a listing of the changes and timelines, please refer to Appendix B.  The ministry is now seeking stakeholder and public input on these aforementioned changes.  The comment period will end on September 29, 2017.
