Do you ship by Air?  Changes are happening in IATA, will they impact you?

The IATA (International Air Transport Association) has recently released the summary of significant changes to the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR). These will appear in the upcoming 60th Edition effective on January 1, 2019.

Users of the Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) were invited to review the Significant Changes to the 60th Edition that will be in effect from 1 January 2019 going forward until the next revised edition.

The summary of changes appears in the introduction section of the regulations. It allows individuals to check for items that may impact their current shipping needs ahead of time before the regulations come into effect in a few months. IATA has highlighted a variety of changes to existing regulations as well as provided information on new and deleted items.

IATA has advised that there are many instances where the word risk has been changed to hazard such as but not limited to “subsidiary risk” is now referred to as ‘subsidiary hazard’.  IATA made this change to reflect the correct usage of the term risk to align with other safety management systems worldwide.

Some of the other changes are as follows:

  • Training Requirements: Explanation of the window for recurrent training
  • State and Operator Variations: Many state and operator changes have been made. Please check with the airline you ship with as they may have changed
  • Classification: Clarification on the classification of ammonium nitrate fertilizers, changes to the classification of corrosive substances to align with the GHS subcommittee work etc.
  • Addition of 12 new UN Numbers, UN 3537 to UN 3548
  • Changes to a variety of existing Special Provisions and additions of A213,A334, A806 and A807
  • Changes to Packing Instructions

The above list is not all-inclusive. For the full list of changes, please see the following link.
